Day 1 - Like Clockwork

We left the house in time to stop by the Centurion Club at the airport for lunch before boarding our flight to Frankfurt.

The flight left on time with our Apple airtag showing that our only checked bag was indeed in the cargo hold of our airplane. So far so good.  Dinner was promptly served and we slept for almost 7 hours before arriving in Frankfurt at 8am. Nice!

We arrived at the new Terminal 3 and had to take 2 buses to Terminal 1. Their train system was not working. Those 2 terminals are really really far apart ... we had a grand tour of the airport grounds with planes and activity happening everywhere ... like a bee hive.

Our flight on Croatia Airlines also left on time and we arrived in Split at 2pm as planned. Took an Uber to our hotels to relax and take a small nap before venturing outside to explore.

Our hotel is actually inside the Diocletian's Palace which is an ancient Roman palace and fortress complex that was built at the end of the third century AD by the Roman Emperor Diocletian as his retirement residence.  This is the main attraction in Split and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We met with Jason and Heather, who had been in Europe for 12 days already mostly in Slovenia, and with Roman and Marta, who has also been here for a few days mostly in Montenegro.  We had a nice dinner at the main plaza and went to bed.

Armando and Monica ended up stuck in Vienna waiting for their bags which apparently Iberia lost.  If it all gets resolved, the plan is for them to catch up with the group Saturday night at Plitvice National Park.

It is interesting for me to be back here after 14 years.  The center and the old city all looks basically the same ... it feels like I was just here ... lots of memories surfacing ... time is an interesting concept ... sometimes it is a thing, and sometimes it is not and then it all feels like now ... and a gap of 14 years does not exist.

A nice day and a half ... uneventful, all as planned, all on-schedule .... a great start for the adventure.

Tomorrow, we have a leisurely day in Split to see the sights.  We will pick up our motorcycles in the afternoon and get ready to go on Saturday.
